The Semantic Geo-Spatial Web

In 1993, in a research seminar with Prof Freitag on the development of a language for cartographic applications, my idea was born to apply explicitly defined meaning to a visual representations of things with a spatial origin. Having spend considerable amount of time studying conventional GIS systems it was time for a change, in particular to represent maps on the emerging world wide web. But only the publicity of Tim Berners Lee Semantic Web vision gave way to the introduction of semantic technologies into web browser and programming languages.
